Warum anders · Why We're Different

More Than Daycare.
More Than a Language Class.

The Discovery Atelier is built around one conviction: children who love learning, learn for life. Every decision we make — about space, time, language, rest — reflects that.

I

Children aren't projects.

We don't believe a 3-year-old should be solving math problems or drilling vocabulary. We believe they should be examining worms, building towers that fall down, and wanting to find out why the sky is blue. That's real learning. Everything else follows.

II

Real Immersion — Not a German Class

Our children don't attend German lessons — they live in German. Native-speaking educators communicate exclusively in German. The children barely notice they're learning a language. They're just playing — in German.

III

European Pedagogy: Reggio, Waldorf, Montessori

Not one method applied rigidly. The best ideas from three generations of educators — reinterpreted daily. Montessori's freedom, Waldorf's respect for imagination, Reggio's love of the question.

IV

Maximum 16 Children

With 16 children, there are no back rows. No child gets lost. No day goes unnoticed. Every educator knows every child — not just their name, but their questions, their curiosity, their specific way of lighting up.

V

Radical Parent Transparency

Daily photo updates. Open-door policy. Monthly personal reports from your child's educator. We're building the school we would have wanted for our own children. That's not a tagline. That's the reason we're doing this.

Für welche Familien · Is This Right for You?

We're Built for Families
Who Think Differently

The Discovery Atelier isn't for every family. That's intentional.

We're not the right school if you expect monthly progress reports with measurable outcomes.

We're the right school if you believe that the most important thing a child can learn is that learning is joyful.

You want more than childcare

You're not looking for someone to watch your child. You want an environment that challenges, inspires, and builds — where your child is genuinely learning every hour.

You believe languages open the world

Learning languages not because it's useful — but because it makes the world bigger. Because a second language is a second way of thinking. Because children who play in German, one day dream in German.

You value small groups and real attention

16 children maximum. Your child is not a number here. Every educator knows every child. Small groups produce outcomes that large classrooms simply cannot replicate.

You want a school that feels like a community

Our founding families help shape The Discovery Atelier. This community is intentionally small so that everyone truly knows everyone — children and parents alike.

You're an expat or globally-minded family

German-speaking, international, or families tied to Germany, Switzerland, and Austria will feel right at home. And English-only families: your children will thrive here too.

Transparency matters to you

Daily updates. Open doors. Monthly personal notes from your child's educator. You're trusting us with your child's daily world. We take that seriously — and keep you close to it.

You believe children should be children.

Not little adults with a schedule. Not investments expecting a return. Just children — who wonder, ask questions, fail, and try again. If you believe that, you're in the right place.

Unsere Grenze · Our Commitments

What We Will Never Do.

We will never send worksheets home.
We will never compare children to each other.
We will never pressure parents with learning objectives.
We will never label a child as "behind on development."
We will never use screens as learning tools.
We will never "teach" German — German just happens.
Unser Standort · Our Location

We've found a space
in Cornelius.

We've identified a property in Cornelius that meets our full NC DCDEE licensing requirements — outdoor access, the right size, the right feel. We're finalizing the agreement.

Founding Family commitments are what make this happen. We need 6 families to confirm before we can sign. 5 have already said yes.

This isn't a survey. Your commitment directly determines when — and whether — we open on schedule.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The Discovery Atelier opens in February 2027 — the first cohort starts as a full-year program (2027–2028).
We accept children aged 2–4 years. Our founding cohort focuses on children born September 2022 through August 2025, who will remain with us for 18–36 months before transitioning to kindergarten.
Not at all. Most of our families have zero prior German. Our immersion approach is specifically designed for children starting from no exposure — language is acquired naturally through play, relationships, and daily life. Parental fluency is not required.
Full-Time tuition starts at $1,950/month, all-inclusive (lunch, snacks, all materials, daily updates). Part-time enrollment is not available — the program runs on a full-day, full-week rhythm by design.

Founding Families — the first 12 families who commit — receive a permanently locked rate of $1,750/month, plus exclusive benefits no future family can receive.

Children born September 2022–August 2025 typically remain with us 18–36 months. When transitioning to kindergarten, they leave bilingual, cognitively strong, and with a foundation no local school can replicate. We actively support every transition.
We've identified a candidate space in Cornelius — South Lake Norman, 5 minutes from I-77. We're finalizing the lease. The final step: 6 Founding Family commitments. We're at 5. The official address will be shared with founding families first.
School hours: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Drop-off: 8:30–8:45 AM, Pick-up: 3:30–3:45 PM. Early drop-off from 7:30 AM, late pick-up until 4:30 PM (late fee: $2/minute after 4:30 PM).
No. We are the first and only German-English bilingual immersion preschool in the Lake Norman region. Our approach blends Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia rather than applying any one method rigidly. The 16-child maximum and native German-speaking educators are unique to this area.
Not in the way most schools do. We don't test children. We don't rank them. We don't send home report cards with grades.

What we do: observe closely, document moments of curiosity, and share what we see with you — in daily photos and monthly personal updates from your child's educator.

We believe a child who asks more questions at the end of the year than at the beginning has learned more than any test could measure.
That question assumes there's a race. There isn't.

Every child acquires language on their own timeline. Our job is to make German so joyful, so natural, so woven into every moment of the day that the language arrives — not because we pushed it, but because it couldn't stay away.
The best preparation for kindergarten is a child who loves learning.

Not a child who can write their name (though they often can). Not a child who can count to 20 (though they often do).

A child who wakes up curious. Who isn't afraid to be wrong. Who tries again without being asked.

That child will thrive anywhere.
